Classes & Instruction

Current Classes and Workshops

I have experience teaching students of all ages and all levels of music ability. I also provide instruction in piano skills for non-pianists as well and can help coach vocalists, not in terms of refining their voice, but to better grasp the fundamentals of harmony, voice leading, and
counterpoint. I also teach trumpet at a beginner level.

Generally, I like to teach students with a holistic approach including the fundamentals of harmony, voice leading, and counterpoint while encouraging studies in composition, songwriting and arranging. These fundamental skills lead to writing big band scores, arrangements for small jazz ensembles, or string quartets – whatever interests the student. Foundations in history, theory, and ear training help with their instrumental development.

I have also taught jazz improvisation in group settings inspired by the teachings of Dr. Barry Harris, for whom I have studies under in his master class. Dr. Harris has an incredible educational program where he teaches the fundamentals of music for every kind of student. His half step rules of how to run dominant seventh scales or major or minor scales are just the beginning of a life-long journey of discovering music. I have studied with Dr. Harris for many years and continue to go to his workshops, now virtual due to COVID-19.

Youth Beginner Piano

I teach beginner piano students. We look at Alfred texts and songs chosen by the student. Sometimes songs by popular artists but also “World Music”. The fundamentals of learning the keyboard are emphasized.

Adolescent and Pre-College students

This is a very exciting time for the student. Many new things are being encountered at school and in Life, so I encourage the student to learn basics but also venture into jazz and other popular music studies. Preparation for College auditions is offered. I also have experience studying in several schools in Canada and U.S. and can work with students to guide them in the  application process.

Adult Beginner thru Advanced Piano

Alfred texts are used and then additional repertoire is brought in from Bach and Mozart to Chopin and Ravel. Jazz improvisation is taught and I encourage my students to join bands if they haven’t already. Advanced studies including writing for a big band and film scoring can be pursued… there is no limit! Sibelius notation software is encouraged.

Production Studies

It is so rewarding to record yourself and produce a mp3 that weaves together vocal tracks, midi instruments, loops and drums. My students can use this training for audition purposes, to line-up gigs, or to build a library of material for future dissemination. Pro Tools is the main software to be taught which is the basis for many DAW. Midi-sequencing, mixing, and audio recording… all these aspects are covered in this class.

Additional Studies – Beginner Trumpet

I offer beginner trumpet lessons with a focus on fundimental exercises and rhythm.  Each trumpet lesson is customized to help students grow, gain confidence, and inspire motivation.

Vocalist

Instruction

I offer training for vocalists and performers understand the fundamentals of harmony, voice leading, and counterpoint.

This style of training helps relate vocals to a wider musical context, allowing performers to become more comfortable and confident singing with a backing track, a real band, or performing on stage.
